Wow, seriously... I cannot say enough wonderful things about these two beautiful people. Never have we been SO welcomed and treated like family as we were with these guys. It started out as a long term relationship (between us and our couple!) as they live in China. Our meetings were done via phone and email over the past 6 months and when we met them in person just days before the wedding, it was as if we'd known them all along. Not only did they travel from across the world to get married in Scenic McCall, Idaho; but pretty much all of their guests did as well. Jessica being from the UK meant that all of her family had to hop over the pond, their many friends from China, and of course there was Matt's family from all over the US. Only 1 guest was from Idaho... well, and the photographers of course! It's definitely a testament to how totally rad this couple is.
I have always said that my favorite part of weddings is listening to the toasts. Many times we don't know our clients on a personal level. We get to chat with them at their consultation, possibly spend an hour or two with them on an engagement session and exchange a few emails... but then WHAM! they get to spend more time with US on their wedding day than with each other. Like it or not, it becomes a very personal relationship very quickly. We get the front row seat to the emotional roller coaster that is your wedding day. We have to be the one to ask the bride's mother, sister and best friend to leave the room so that we can get quality portrait time. We are often with the bride and groom for hours before they even see each other. So, even though we don't REALLY know our clients-- it always seems as if we do. Then the toasts roll around, and we're reminded that we've just stepped into these people's lives on the first day of their new chapter. The chapter before we existed is what matters even more. What got them to this day and more importantly who are the people that have been there all along, who know them better than anyone else? The father of the bride who cries when he remembers the day she was born, and the groom's best friend who's known him since first grade with one asinine story after the other. They talk about how the couple met from their perspective, how the bride called her sister after the first date and told her that "He's the one-- I just know it." and in the case of Matt Erickson, that he is truly the kindest person his best man has ever known. How not only is he a kind and great person, but he expects kindness and greatness of others-- therefor he makes you want to be the kindest and greatest person you can be. I found myself nodding while he was giving the toast as if I was saying, "Yup-- that's Matt alright!" thinking about a guy I'd met only 2 days prior. Both of them... both of US were totally blown away by their hospitality, gratitude, and humbleness. We were so lucky to be a part of such a gorgeous couple's wedding day and it's definitely one that we will never forget.
I always get carried away with blogging when I do it in the middle of night, so I'll shut up now and let you enjoy the photos to tell the rest of the story of the day! Thank YOU Matt + Jess. Congrats! Enjoy
