Oh boy, where to start. If you don't already know, the FLIPPING GORGEOUS girl in these photos is my life [business] partner and co-master at Ampersand Studios; Nichole. The boy is her fiancé, Matthew. These two are going to seal the deal on Sunday, September 23rd only a couple of weeks away. Nichole and I met in college where we studied graphic design together. We started Ampersand Studios in May of 2009 where we participated in our first wedding show the same semester that we had to prepare our senior portfolio show and not to mention finish up our credits to be eligible for graduation. It was hectic to say the least, and we spent hours upon hours together in the basement of my old house creating this thing- this business. A child, really. It was a little of me and a little of Nic and we had to birth it, nurture it, and learn from our mistakes. We barely knew each other at all before deciding to go into business, and if you would have asked us then-- I betcha we never would have thought we were creating something so amazing or that we would be where we are today. Anyway, over the past few years we have grown to be more than business buds, but now I consider Nichole family. We are like sisters.. most of the time we have a blast and can read each other's minds but then we argue about directions or if something is yellow or green. It's been a really fun 4 years and I have gotten to be there from the very beginning of Matt. Since I have known her, Nichole only dated a couple of other guys before Matt came along. They were cool, but they were mostly quick decisions for her that they just weren't "the one!" And, this girl was on the hunt. The hunt for a husband! Every time we would see a cute single guy at a wedding or out around town we would analyze how good of a husband/father he would be! haha, and they never added up- just not quite "marriage material" I guess! Then one day Nichole stumbled upon a cute guy in a restaurant. The waitress checked him out from behind the bar and talked herself into leaving her number on his receipt... The next morning, Nichole got a text message from an unfamiliar number- a San Francisco area code. It said something along the lines of "So, do you give your number to just every guy that comes into the bar?" we got his name and immediately initiated operation Facebook Stalk. Only one red flag. His profile picture had 2 small children in it with him. Not that it's a deal breaker-- but let's get real, there was no attachment yet ;) -- so she texts, "oh, are those your kids?" Matt's response- "oh no no no!" and we both sighed with relief. Another text comes through- "My kids are MUCH older." 100 points for Matt. His sense of humor and sarcasm is SPOT ON with his future counterpart. Nichole's response, "oh really? Any sons my age?" and well-- the rest is history.
Other than telling these stories, there really is no way to describe this thing these guys have going. They really are made for each other. Seriously- nobody else would ever be able to understand them and love them the way they do each other. I have picked up on most of their inside jokes since I'm around Nichole so much, but to most people I can imagine thinking they speak their own language. I'll let you in on one here to help explain what you're about to see. So, let's say there's like a really big watermelon at the store, Matt might say "super watermelon" ok? This one is pretty easy to understand. Or like, if once he moves out of your house you install new bathroom fixtures and get direcTV he might call it "super-house." Or if Nichole sets up dual monitors and a laptop on her coffee table so she can edit weddings whilst watching My Fair Wedding, he would call it "super office." Got it? ok so hence the theme and what we refer to the 'wedding day'--- no no, it's SUPER DAY. There are HUNDREDS of things like this, and it makes these guys so fun to watch.
I couldn't be happier for my friends. I know that Matt and Nichole will be in my life forever and I can't wait for all of the amazing and hilarious times that we have to look forward to. I can't wait until Nichole has children and I can say, "See!! hahahaha!!" I know that we will have many more vacations together as couples and families, and that we will have plenty more game nights where we laugh until we cry. I have been giving Nichole a hard time about her making me photograph her wedding... but the truth is I am really really really excited to. I am thankful that she chose me to document Super Day for them, as I am grateful for all of our clients who trust us with what we think is the most important thing that you can buy on your wedding day. Being on the front lines of seeing what she's been going through with the planning, I understand why our photographs are even more important. A bride puts months and months into every tiny detail and it's over in the blink of an eye. Not only is it important to document the love that a newly wed couple has for each other, their personalities, their nuances... but it's important to get the table runners that are hand embroidered by her mother. The tiny papiér maché flowers that each petal was sculpted and painted, the shoes that she scoured for, and the family heirlooms that represent a lost loved one. All of these things I get the honor of preserving for my friend on her wedding day. I get to be the one to deliver the best gift- that it will never really be over because they can re-live SUPER DAY any time they want by simply pulling out a book.
Nichole, Thank you for being my friend, and my sister. I love you so much, and I know that you and Matt love each other so so much. And if you ever need to be reminded, just look at these photos. Enjoy, Frannie.
See, what did I tell ya? ...Well crap. Now I'm gonna have to come up with something else for my toast at the wedding.
